Pygmy Lush - Mount Hope

Pygmy Lush is basically a bunch of ex-Pg. 99 members making folk. of course due to their screamo backgrounds it is in no ways happy music. their first album, Bitter River, included a bunch of hardcore songs thrown in with the folk, but they just made the album inconsistent and are thankfully not present in Mount Hope.

Loma Prieta - Life/Less

Loma Prieta are a screamo / hardcore band whose first release came out in 2006. this is their 2010 album, but without knowing those prior facts you'd think it came straight out of the 90's. the production on this album, rather than being clean like Last City, is very fuzzy and gives the music a grindy feel to it.

Daisuck & Prostitute - 死ぬまで踊りつづけて

crazy japanese punk / no wave from the early 80's. screeching guitars that almost sound similar to Big Black at times accompanied by a saxophone that manages to be just as abrasive and wouldn't be out of place on a John Zorn album.

Celeste - Morte(s) Nee(s)

Celeste are, to keep it simple, the french version of Heaven In Her Arms with more sludge metal. if that's not a good enough reason to download this i don't know what is.

Gunther Schuller - Jazz Abstractions

(no cover art that i could find)

Gunther Schuller is an American composer, and this is a lineup of musicians playing one of his composed pieces, including Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman. Jazz Abstractions is apparently 'third stream', which describes a mixture of jazz and classical music. i know nothing about the genre, but the description certainly fits and it sounds amazing.

Yakuza - Of Seismic Consequence

Yakuza are a progressive metal band whose guitarwork i would compare to Mastodon's recent album Crack The Skye. unlike Mastodon, though, they add a layer of complexity to their music with the use of unconventional instruments (for metal), with a saxophone playing a large part in most songs, occasionally alongside a clarinet.

Unwound - Challenge For A Civilized Society

Challenge For A Civilized Society is Unwound's 5th album, and it acts as a transition album of sorts, from their older noise rock albums to their psychedelic masterpiece Leaves Turn Inside You. it's less heavy than their previous albums with more of a math rock sound, as well as some psychedelic experimentalism on the longer tracks.

Heaven In Her Arms - Paraselene

Heaven In Here Arms used to be a band who played screamo with a post-rock edge. they're also japanese, and while they were good they came across as an Envy ripoff.

however, with their 2010 album, they've expanded on their sound, incorporated many more influences and created something unique. Paraselene is a mixture of doom metal/sludge, screamo, post-rock, hardcore and sometimes borders on black metal. in general it is heavy as fuck and a huge step up from their previous releases.

CHLL PLL - Aggressively Humble

while one of the two members of CHLL PLL is acclaimed drummer Zach Hill, mostly known for his incredibly intense drumming in Hella and random noise / math rock bands, this couldn't be more different. while the drumming is still quick and technical for the most part, it's accompanied by synths and Zachary Nelson's bizarre vocals.

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles

Flying Lotus' 2008 album Los Angeles is a little more restrained than his insane 2010 album Cosmogramma, but that doesn't lower the quality of his music. while it may not be as hard-hitting, it's every bit as creative and unique as Cosmogramma, and is an all-around lovely instrumental hip-hop album.

Univers Zero - Clivages

Univers Zero are a progressive rock band that have been making music since the 70s, yet Clivages was released in 2010. they've had almost 10 albums released over the space of 33 years, yet they still retain a similar sound yet expand at the same time. with a live ensemble performing in the studio, this album certainly features an orchestral sound, especially with the lack of focus on guitars.

Venetian Snares - Winter In the Belly Of A Snake

this is one of Snares' darker albums, but unlike the similarly creepy Doll Doll Doll which goes for an extremely heavy approach, this album is more subdued, most likely because Snares created it to deal with the death of his father. it even features Aaron's own vocals on tracks like Dad, which add to the personal feeling and atmosphere of the album.

Mew - Frengers

Mew are pretty standard indie rock, not a great deal of experimentation except for some slight dream pop influence, but they're definitely one of the best bands of the genre. the first 3 songs and the last two are all amazing, the album gets a bit weaker around the middle and so is inconsistent but is overall very good.

Clann Zú - Rua

Clann Zú are a unique post-rock band that combine crushing melodies and crescendos that the post-rock genre is most well-known for with traditional Irish music (i live in an area famous for Irish festivals, i'm an expert on this shit), achieved mostly through the use of Gaelic lyrics on some songs and a violin. despite the mostly organic feel of the album, there are some trip-hop elements included as well, most prominent on the song Ri Rá.

True Widow - True Widow

one of the more perculiar shoegaze albums i've heard, True Widow don't go for any dreamy qualities. the distorted guitars are there but they have a slow, plodding feel that is reminiscent of stoner rock and the album comes across as quite depressing. this band is for the most part completely unique and i've never heard anything like it.

MP3 V2

Dirty Three - Ocean Songs

amazing post-rock. not overly experimental but it has a bit of a folky edge and it's not just crescendo-core. their violinist is extremely talented and this was released in 1998, way before many bands were doing the same thing. well worth a listen.

Spylacopa - Spylacopa

Spylacopa is a fairly unknown 'super-group' with members from bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Isis. as such, they play post-hardcore with some sludge influence. there are a couple of ballad-y tracks as well, reminiscent of Pink Floyd. also, Julie Christmas sings on one of the tracks, which is pretty awesome.

United Nations - Never Mind The Bombings, Here's Your Six Figures

United Nations are a screamo supergroup whose details have been shrouded in mystery since the band first came to be. since its members are in various contracts with record labels, the band members are not known (aside from Geoff Rickley from Thursday) and the band's name prompted the actual UN to remove half their websites.

this is their second release, and it is slightly tamer than their original 2008 album (very, very slightly). while i mentioned Geoff Rickley, this isn't anything like Thursday, it's much closer to powerviolence than emo. this is still a great screamo EP, and 2010 needed one. shame it's only 10 minutes long.

Tokimonsta - Cosmic Intoxication

more instrumental hip-hop. unlike the last album i posted, though, this is very similar to Flying Lotus. all kinds of electronic experimentation is present, with some acoustic guitars and trumpets scattered throughout the album.

MP3 320

Rabbit Hole Revelations - EP

Rabbit Hole Revelations is a one-man instrumental hip-hop project. i'd consider it closer to Nujabes than anything as very little electronics are used (aside from sampling, which doesn't really count). instead, the beats are complimented by lovely acoustic guitar and piano.

this is also completely unknown, so TONS OF HIPSTER CRED

Maps & Atlases - Tree, Swallows, Houses

Maps & Atlases are a hectic math rock band from Chicago that, despite being incredibly technical, aren't heavy at all. guitarwork is more focused on tapping rather than riffs, and so the album remains light and fun.

also, don't get their new album, it is really bad.
